I have quite a few Clematis but I dont know whether they are early flowering or late so I dont know when to prune them. After flowering the leaves go brown n stay like that till the next year when they start sprouting again, but the bottom of the plants are very leggy, no leaves, is this alright? I want them to spread so I havnt pruned them.
Clematis are divided into three pruning groups: The first group comprises the early-flowering clematis and can be pruned in mid to late spring, after flowering. The second group blooms in May and June; the third blooms from June to late summer. The groups 2 and 3 are pruned in late February and early March. The leaves may turn brown because of too much sun or clematis wilt, a fungal disease. A spider mite infestation is possible, too.
