Clumps of herbaceous perennials can now be divided: make sure that the transplanted divisions have roots and shoots.
You can still plant herbaceous perennials: check that the plants you buy have strong, green shoots.
Care for your evergreens: remove any frost damaged shoots damaged by earlier cold weather.
Watch out for pests: protect lilies, Delphinium, Hosta and other new shoots from slugs and snails.
A general-purpose fertiliser can now be applied to borders and beds: take care not to damage emerging shoots.
Slightly tender plants such as Teucrium and lavender should now be pruned: make the cuts just above fresh, new shoots.
Did you already prune winter-flowering jasmine? Remove any dead or damaged shoots and feed and mulch after pruning.
In mild areas winter coverings of fleece, straw, polythene etc can be removed now, to prevent new shoots being damaged.
