Strawberries

After the final harvest of strawberries, tuck spare runners into the row to fill in gaps. Remove any unwanted runners.

Strawberries can be propagated: sink 9cm (3.5in) pots of compost into the beds and insert individual runners into them.

Strawberries can easily be grown: They thrive in sunshine but they do not like wet roots. They should be planted now.

Fruit picking can begin with strawberries, cherries, summer-fruiting raspberries, currants, the earliest of the plums.

With a little luck, the first fruits on your strawberries may appear late in May.
